Diode - definition
A diode is a two-terminal semiconductor device that primarily allows electric current to flow in one direction only. It consists of a junction between two semiconductor regions—n-type and p-type—forming a p-n junction, whose conductive properties depend on the polarity of the applied voltage. In the forward direction, the diode exhibits low electrical resistance, while in the reverse direction, its resistance is very high, effectively blocking current flow.
The essential function of a diode is to rectify alternating current (AC), making it a fundamental component in power supplies, converters, and rectifier circuits. Its operation is based on the behavior of charge carriers in the semiconductor material and the recombination of electrons and holes at the junction interface. Depending on their design and intended use, diodes can be optimized for parameters such as switching speed, breakdown voltage, or conduction efficiency.
Semiconductor technology has enabled the development of various types of diodes, including Zener diodes, Schottky diodes, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), tunnel diodes, and laser diodes—each serving specific functions in electronic circuits. LEDs, beyond their use as indicators, are widely applied in lighting and display technologies. Specialized diodes are used in protection circuits, signal modulation and detection, and optical communication systems. As a fundamental building block in electronics, the diode remains a key element in many complex functional systems and continues to play a vital role in the advancement of modern technologies.
