Choke is a passive component of electrical and electronic circuits whose primary property is inductance—the ability to store energy in a magnetic field generated by the flowing current. It consists of a coil of wire wound around a magnetic or air core, and its operation is based on opposing sudden changes in electric current. A choke primarily resists alternating currents while offering much less impedance to direct currents, making it an effective filter in power supply and signal applications.
In alternating current circuits, a choke limits current fluctuations and suppresses electromagnetic interference and harmonics. Thanks to its ability to "smooth" signals, it is used in switching converters, power supplies, filtering circuits, and interference suppression systems. Depending on its construction and core material, chokes can operate over a wide range of frequencies and power levels, allowing their use in both microelectronics and power installations.
In lighting technology, chokes are also used in discharge lamp circuits, where they act as current limiters and ignition components. The operational characteristics of a choke depend on its inductance, self-resistance, core type, and coil geometry. These parameters affect its noise suppression efficiency, energy performance, and resistance to varying operating conditions. Chokes are essential components in the design of reliable and stable electronic systems, especially in environments exposed to high-frequency impulses and interference.
