Inductance - definition

Inductance is a physical quantity that describes the ability of an electrical circuit or its component to generate electromotive force (EMF) as a result of changes in electric current. This phenomenon stems from Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction and manifests as the generation of voltage opposing the change in current intensity. Inductance quantifies the resistance a circuit presents to dynamic changes in current and is expressed in henries (H).

In the context of passive components such as inductors, inductance depends on the winding geometry, number of turns, type of magnetic core material, and conductor arrangement. The greater the inductance, the stronger the delaying effect on current variations—this is especially relevant in alternating current (AC) circuits, where inductive components influence phase and frequency response characteristics. In such scenarios, inductive reactance also occurs, which increases with frequency.

Inductance can also be mutual, meaning a change in current in one circuit induces a voltage in another—this principle underlies the operation of transformers and magnetic coupling systems. These phenomena are fundamental to the functioning of many electronic and power devices, including converters, filters, resonant circuits, and wireless power transfer systems. In digital systems, the inductance of wires and interconnections can affect signal integrity and is therefore considered in the analysis of high-frequency circuits.

The significance of inductance extends beyond electronics—it is also used in sensors, drives, diagnostic equipment, and measurement technology. In electrical circuit design, precise determination and control of inductance are essential for ensuring system stability, energy efficiency, and electromagnetic compatibility.
