Henr (H) is the unit of measurement of inductance in the UoM, named after the American physicist Joseph Henry, one of the pioneers of the study of electromagnetism. It describes the ability of an electrical circuit or element, most commonly a coil, to produce an electromotive force (SEM) in response to a change in current. In practice, this means that if the current intensity changes over time, a voltage appears in the circuit to counteract this change, according to Faraday's law of induction.
A henr unit is defined as the inductance of a Coils in which a change in current of one ampere (A) per second results in an SEM of one volt (V). The interdependence of these quantities reflects a fundamental law of electromagnetism that is applicable to the analysis of dynamic circuits, energy converters, transformers, Electric Motors and signal transmission systems.
In practical circuits, henr is often used in prefixed forms, such as millihenr (mH) or microhenr (µH), because of the typical values used in electronics. The inductance of an element depends on its geometry, the number of turns, the type of core and the placement in the circuit. Along with capacitance and resistance, it is one of the key parameters characterising a circuit's response to varying signals, including resonance, filtering and damping.
Henr as a unit has no direct equivalent in mechanical phenomena, but its importance can be compared to mass in dynamic systems - it describes current inertia, i.e. the tendency of a current to maintain its state over time. In the context of power systems and power electronics, this parameter is important for operational stability, power quality and noise reduction.
