Amplifier - definition

Amplifier is an electronic circuit whose primary function is to increase the power, voltage, or current of an input signal without altering its waveform characteristics. Amplifiers are indispensable components in numerous electronic systems, both analog and digital, playing a key role in signal processing, transmission, and reproduction across a wide range of applications—from audio technology to industrial automation.

From a technical perspective, an amplifier receives a weak electrical signal and uses external power to generate a stronger output signal while preserving critical input parameters such as frequency, waveform, and phase. The core characteristic of an amplifier is its gain, defined as the ratio of output to input signal, and typically expressed in linear units or decibels (dB).

Amplifiers can be implemented using various technologies—including transistor-based, vacuum tube-based, and operational amplifier-based integrated circuits. Their operation may cover a single frequency band or a wide range, depending on the application. In analog circuit design, important parameters include bandwidth, linearity, noise figure, as well as input and output impedance. Amplifiers can also function as signal buffers, isolating system stages to prevent mutual interference.

The applications of amplifiers are diverse: from boosting microphone signals to levels suitable for power stages, amplifying sensor outputs in measurement systems, to strengthening radio and video signals. In digital systems, amplifiers serve as level shifters and pulse drivers, ensuring signal integrity. Their design can be optimized for high power, low power consumption, high linearity, or minimal distortion, depending on specific system requirements and applications.
