A Chemoreceptor is a specialised cell or biological structure capable of detecting and converting chemical signals into nerve impulses. Receptors of this type are an essential part of the sensory systems of living organisms, enabling them to receive information about the chemical composition of the environment and the interior of the body. The action of chemoreceptors is based on the interaction of detected chemicals, called ligands, with receptor surface proteins, leading to the activation of a physiological or neuronal response.
In higher organisms, chemoreceptors are divided into peripheral and central receptors. Peripheral ones are located, among others, in the nasal cavity and tongue, where they have functions related to the senses of smell and taste. Central chemoreceptors, on the other hand, are mainly located in the central nervous system and are involved in the regulation of homeostatic processes such as respiration and blood pH control by detecting oxygen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen ion concentrations.
At the molecular level, chemoreceptors can take the form of G-protein-coupled membrane receptors, ion channels or ligand-activated enzymes. The signal transduction process initiated by a chemoreceptor leads to a change in the membrane potential of the sensory cell, which can result in the generation of an action potential that is passed on to stimulus-processing structures.
The importance of chemoreceptors extends beyond biological systems - their action provides inspiration for the development of chemical sensors used in technology, such as gas detectors, air composition analysers or medical diagnostic devices. Research into their mechanisms is also important in the context of biomimetics and the development of artificial perceptual systems.
