ENOB - definition

ENOB (Effective Number of Bits) is a metrological parameter used to evaluate the actual resolution of analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analogue converters (DACs), taking into account the effects of noise and distortion on the quality of signal processing. Unlike the nominal number of bits, which refers to the resolution resulting from the number of levels of quantisation, ENOB describes the actual ability of a converter to represent a signal with a specified precision under dynamic conditions.

The ENOB value is expressed as a number of bits and calculated from the SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) or SINAD (Signal-to-Noise and Distortion Ratio) according to a logarithmic relationship. This parameter allows the ideal accuracy of the system to be compared with its actual behaviour, taking into account, among other things, processing non-linearities, thermal noise, harmonic interference and jitter time. ENOB decreases as the frequency of the sampled signal increases, reflecting the dynamic limitations of the converter.

In practice, ENOB is a key quality indicator for measurement systems, recording devices, Digital Oscilloscopes, audio converters and extended data acquisition systems. For designers and engineers, ENOB enables the evaluation of useful signal resolution in the context of a specific application, which has a direct impact on measurement accuracy, detection capabilities and signal filtering requirements.

In system analysis, ENOB can also be used to evaluate the entire signal processing path, not just a single transducer, allowing the influence of other elements in the analogue and digital path to be taken into account. Maintaining a high ENOB requires not only good quality converters, but also proper input circuit design, shielding and synchronisation of clock signals.
