Clapp generator - definition

The Clapp Generator is a variation of the sine wave generator based on feedback using an LC resonant circuit, mainly used for generating signals with high frequency stability. It is a development of the classic Colpitts generator, in which an additional series capacitor is added to the resonant circuit. This element allows better control of the oscillation frequency and increases its resistance to changes in the parameters of the transistors or amplifier gain.

The basic Clapp circuit uses an amplifier (usually a Bipolar transistors or FET) and a resonant circuit consisting of one Coils and three Capacitors. The capacitor connected in series with the coil mainly determines the frequency of the oscillations, allowing the generator to be fine-tuned using a high-quality element (e.g. an air capacitor or capacitive Diodes). Compared to other LC generators, the Clapp design provides greater thermal stability and better selective properties.

The Clapp generator is used in radio systems, local generators, measurement oscillators and as a source of stable reference signals. Its advantages make it a frequent choice in designs where low susceptibility to frequency drift and high spectral purity of the output signal are required. However, it requires careful selection of passive components and the correct amplifier configuration to maintain stable operating conditions and adequate oscillation amplitude.
