Electric generator - definition

An Electric Generator is an electromechanical device whose primary function is to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy by the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction. This phenomenon, described by Faraday's law, involves the generation of an electromotive force (SEM) in a conductor crossing the lines of a magnetic field or as a result of a change in the magnetic flux encompassing the circuit.

The construction of a generator essentially comprises two basic components: the stator, which is the stationary part that produces or closes the magnetic circuit, and the rotor, which performs a rotational motion relative to the stator and is equipped with windings or permanent magnets. Depending on the design and output voltage characteristics, generators are divided into direct current generators and alternating current generators (alternators).

In industrial systems, generators are coupled to different drive sources such as steam turbines, water turbines, gas turbines, internal combustion engines or wind systems to generate electricity in power plants and emergency power systems. Generator operating parameters, such as voltage, frequency, power rating and voltage regulation characteristics, must be closely matched to the requirements of the power grid or local loads.

Modern generator designs use advanced cooling systems, automatic excitation systems and electronic voltage regulators (AVRs) to increase energy efficiency, performance stability and extend the life of the unit. Special attention is also paid to synchronisation of generators with the grid, which requires precise control of the amplitude, frequency and phase of the generated voltage to ensure safe and stable operation of the power system.
