Hi-Fi - definition

Hi-Fi (High Fidelity) is a technical and marketing term referring to high fidelity sound reproduction that reproduces as accurately as possible the original acoustic signal recorded during the recording process. In the context of electro-acoustic engineering, Hi-Fi refers to a set of audio system quality parameters that allow transparent sound reproduction with minimal distortion, noise and non-linearities throughout the entire electro-acoustic path - from the signal source, through the processing to the electro-acoustic transducers.

Hi-Fi systems include components such as amplifiers, digital-to-analogue converters (DACs), loudspeakers and signal sources (e.g. turntables, CD players, streamers) whose frequency response, dynamic range and intermodulation levels meet exacting technical standards. In practice, the Hi-Fi standard is considered to be the ability to reproduce the acoustic bandwidth in the range 20 Hz - 20 kHz with non-linearity not exceeding ±3 dB and harmonic distortion less than 1%.

High Hi-Fi quality also requires phase coherence, stereo channel separation and sufficiently low background noise levels, as well as signal timing compatibility in multi-way systems. Professional and audiophile environments also use high-end solutions that extend the Hi-Fi concept to include aesthetic aspects, precise acoustic tuning and specialised engineering materials.

Today, Hi-Fi technology is also penetrating into mobile devices, multimedia systems and home cinema installations, where high fidelity in digital formats is sought, while integrating with digital audio interfaces and low-latency wireless transmission protocols .
