Safety data sheet - definition

Safety Data Sheet (SDS, Safety Data Sheet) is an official technical document containing detailed information on the physicochemical properties, hazards and safe handling of a chemical substance or mixture. It is developed in accordance with international legal and safety standards, and its structure and content are defined by regulations such as the REACH Regulation (EC 1907/2006) in the European Union and the GHS (Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals) system, which provides a harmonised classification and labelling of chemical substances at a global level.

The document consists of sections describing the basic parameters of the substance, including chemical identification, hazard classification, qualitative and quantitative composition, and specific precautions for storage, transport and disposal. A key role in the safety data sheet is played by information on toxicology, environmental effects and first aid and fire-fighting procedures, allowing rapid emergency action in the event of an accident.

In terms of risk management, the safety data sheet provides guidance on personal and collective protection measures, as well as standards for exposure limits in the workplace. Methods of dealing with spillages and requirements for ventilation and fire protection in industrial facilities are also presented. Additional sections deal with the chemical stability of the substance, reactivity and possible interactions with other chemical compounds to control storage conditions and avoid unwanted reactions.

The safety data sheet has an important function in chemical safety and environmental management systems, serving as an essential reference document for workers, emergency services and regulatory authorities. In the pharmaceutical, chemical, automotive and electronics industries, it is a key tool for the correct classification of materials and substances used in production processes. The SDS documentation is regularly updated as a result of new scientific research, regulatory changes and modifications to the composition of products, ensuring compliance with current legal and technological requirements.

In the context of digitalisation and chemical data management systems, SDSs are often integrated into electronic databases and ERP systems, enabling their automatic distribution through supply chains and real-time control of regulatory compliance. The implementation of modern technologies, such as QR code scanning or digital hazardous substance management systems, allows rapid access to up-to-date information on hazards and methods to neutralise the effects of exposure.
