Ring Counters - definition

A Ring Counter is a special type of shift register, used in digital systems to cyclically generate bit sequences of a defined length. Its operation consists of shifting a logical one (or other bit pattern) between successive Flip-Flops, connected in a closed-loop arrangement. After each state change triggered by a clock signal, the activity moves by one position and returns to the starting point at the end of the cycle.

Flip-Flops Counters architecture is based on D or JK flip-flops, in which the output of the last element is connected to the input of the first, creating a ring-like closed circuit. It is usually initialised by writing a logic one to one flip-flop while the others remain in the zero state. This results in an activity cycle of length equal to the number of Flip-Flops, allowing it to be used as a pulse generator, a timing controller or a simple sequential automaton.

The ring counter is characterised by high deterministic operation, simple current state detection and easy synchronisation, which makes it applicable to the design of digital circuits such as state machines, data flow controllers and sequential controllers. Compared to classical binary counters, it requires more flip-flops for the same number of states, but offers a shorter propagation time signal and less risk of synchronisation errors.

Some versions use a Johnson-type counter (also called a transformed counter), which is a modification of the ring counter and generates twice the number of unique states using feedback with inversion. Both types of counters are important elements in the design of sequential structures, both in discrete logic and in programmable systems such as FPGAs or CPLDs.
