Clamp meter - definition

The clamp meter is a measuring instrument used for the non-contact measurement of electric current in conductors, without breaking the circuit. Its characteristic feature is the presence of open pincers (jaws) that encompass the conductor, forming a closed magnetic core. From this, using the principle of electromagnetic induction or the Hall effect, the meter records the value of the current flowing.

In the versions for alternating current (AC), the operation of the meter is based on the measurement of the alternating magnetic field generated by the flowing current. The resulting magnetic flux induces a voltage in the secondary winding of the clamps, proportional to the measured current. Modern models capable of measuring direct current (DC) use Hall Sensors, which detect the intensity of the magnetic field and convert it into an electrical signal.

The clamp meter can act as a universal multimeter, also enabling the measurement of voltage, resistance, frequency, capacitance and circuit continuity testing. Its applications include diagnostics of electrical installations, industrial equipment, power systems and building infrastructure. It is particularly useful for measuring high currents or in situations where direct connection to a circuit would be dangerous or technically difficult.

Industrial versions of clamp meters are often equipped with data logging functions, measurement of inrush currents, a power quality analyser or digital interfaces for integration into SCADA and BMS systems. High precision, noise immunity and ergonomic design make the clamp meter an essential tool for electricians, service technicians and maintenance specialists.
