Multispectral imaging is a technique for recording and analysing images using electromagnetic radiation in multiple narrow spectral bands, typically covering the range from visible light to the near and mid-infrared . Unlike traditional imaging methods, which capture only three primary colour channels (RGB), multispectral imaging captures a much wider range of spectral information, enabling the identification of materials and phenomena not visible to the naked eye.
The technology is based on the reflection, absorption and emission properties of different objects, which respond characteristically depending on wavelength. Each pixel of the multispectral image contains radiation intensity data in several separate channels, allowing for more accurate mapping of the physical and chemical properties of surfaces and analysis of processes over time. Multispectral Recorders are used in satellite systems, drones, aerial cameras and in research laboratories.
Multispectral imaging is used in remote sensing, precision agriculture, geology, archaeology, medicine, material diagnostics, as well as environmental monitoring and security. Among other things, it makes it possible to assess plant health, detect pollution, analyse soil structure, detect climate change or identify hidden structures. Of key importance here is the appropriate selection of spectral bands, which determines the effectiveness of the analysis for a given application.
Multispectral data processing requires specialised algorithms, including spectral classification, statistical analysis and machine learning methods, which allow the extraction of useful information from large image datasets. Compared to hyperspectral imaging, multispectral imaging uses a smaller number of bands, which simplifies analysis while retaining important spectral information.
