Flip-Flops - definition

Flip-Flops is an electronic circuit that performs the function of a threshold comparator with hysteresis, mainly used to convert analogue signals into digital ones and to eliminate noise and signal oscillations at the input. Its characteristic feature is the presence of two different switching thresholds - upper and lower - which define the moments of change of the output state depending on the direction of change of the input voltage.

The use of hysteresis makes the Schmitt flip-flop immune to small fluctuations in the input signal near the switching point, making it particularly useful for processing slow or noisy waveforms. When the input voltage exceeds the upper threshold, the output adopts a logic high state, while when it falls below the lower threshold, it switches to a low state. In the range between these values, the circuit retains the last steady state.

In practice, Schmitt Flip-Flops can be implemented both in analogue technology, e.g. as Comparators with feedback, and in digital technology, in the form of logic gates with appropriately designed input characteristics. They are used in threshold detection systems, conversion of sine to rectangular signals, generation of pulses, noise filtering, and as input elements in microcontrollers and counters where they provide stable interpretation of control signals.
