QWERTZ (typewriter keyboard) is a variant of the alphanumeric keyboard layout used mainly in German-speaking countries such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It takes its name from the distinctive arrangement of the first six letters in the top row of letter keys, where, unlike the layout of QWERTY, the letter 'Z' takes the place of 'Y'. This change is due to the higher frequency of the letter 'Z' in Germanic languages, which improves typing ergonomics and increases the efficiency of text input.
The QWERTZ keyboard, also known as the 'typist's keyboard' in a historical context, is derived from an adaptation of the original typewriter layouts and has been adapted to the specific linguistic needs of users, taking into account diacritical marks and the layout of special symbols used in German, Swiss and Hungarian. The keys responsible for accents and umlauts (e.g. ä, ö, ü) are easily accessible, which promotes fluency in writing.
