The Brushless DC Motor (BLDC, or Brushless DC Motor) is a type of electric motor in which the classic design of a mechanical commutator and brushes has been replaced by an electronic commutation system. As a result, the BLDC motor has a higher efficiency, lower mechanical losses and a much longer service life compared to traditional brushed DC motors.
In BLDC Motors the rotor is equipped with permanent magnets, while the windings are located on the stator. The commutation of the current in the windings is carried out electronically by means of a suitable controller, which controls the phase switching sequence depending on the current position of the rotor. Information on the rotor position comes from Hall Sensors or, in more advanced systems, from sensorless measurements based on induced voltage analysis. Electronic commutation allows very precise control of torque and speed, making BLDCs particularly suitable for highly dynamic and controllable applications.
BLDC Motors can be found in single-phase, two-phase or three-phase configurations, with three-phase versions being the most common due to their good torque characteristics and high efficiency. The use of permanent magnets in the rotor allows for increased power density and reduced thermal losses, while the absence of brushes eliminates maintenance and reduces electromagnetic interference from sparking.
Due to their characteristics, BLDC Motors are used in a wide range of devices - from power tools and domestic appliances, to fans, pumps and precision drives, to electric vehicles, drones and industrial automation systems. Their design promotes miniaturisation and integration into control systems to create compact and energy-efficient drive solutions.
