Ballast is an electrical or electronic device used in power supply systems for discharge light sources, such as fluorescent, sodium, mercury vapour or metal halide lamps, to regulate and stabilise the electrical current flowing through the lamp during operation. In discharge lamps, at the moment of ignition, there is a very low resistance, which, without proper control, could lead to an excessive increase in current and, consequently, damage to the Light sources. Ballasts limit the current to a safe, nominal value, ensuring correct lamp operating conditions and lamp life.
In classical solutions, the ballast was in the form of an electromagnetic choke, which limited the current through its inductive properties. Modern electronic ballasts, based on semiconductor circuits, operate at high frequency, which significantly improves energy efficiency, reduces light flicker and increases comfort. Ballasts also enable functions such as smooth start, light intensity control and communication with lighting management systems.
In addition to its use in lighting technology, the term ballast is also found in the context of mechanical and aerospace systems, where it denotes an element that stabilises the movement or position of objects. In the electrical context, however, the ballast's main task remains to protect the lamp and ensure optimal operating conditions throughout its life cycle. Today's energy efficiency standards promote the use of high-efficiency ballasts, resulting in reduced energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
