Caliper - definition

The calliper is a precision Measuring Tools used in engineering, precision mechanics and machining to accurately measure linear dimensions, internal and external diameters and depths of components. Its design is based on the coaxial movement of the measuring jaws relative to a guide rail on which the graduation scale is placed, which can be read directly or via a vernier, digital or dial system.

The basic element is a slide made of alloys with high dimensional stability, often hardened stainless steel or aluminium, guaranteeing resistance to wear and deformation. The movable slide, seated precisely on the slide, incorporates a measuring system and a locking mechanism that ensures that the measuring position is maintained and that there is no play affecting the accuracy of the reading. Traditional versions use vernier graduations, allowing interpolation of the reading to an accuracy of hundredths of a millimetre, while electronic callipers are equipped with capacitive or inductive transducers, providing a digital measurement result with data transmission to CAD/CAM systems.

The measuring mechanism allows measurements to be taken in three modes: external dimensions using the main jaws, internal dimensions using expandable tips and depth using an extendable stylus. High-precision operation requires consideration of contact forces and environmental conditions, such as thermal expansion of materials and possible contamination on the slide surface. Advanced designs include callipers with a mechanical dial system to eliminate errors parallax, and models with Bluetooth interfaces for wireless recording of measurement results.

The calliper is used in production quality control, calibration of machine parts and metrology measurements requiring mobility and versatility. Specialised versions include models with sharp jaws for measuring grooves, depth callipers for hole analysis and stylus callipers used in the inspection of components with complex geometries. Calibration standards in accordance with ISO and DIN standards define acceptable error tolerances and maintenance procedures to ensure the Tools' long-term precision and reliability under industrial conditions.
