Therefore, it is worth knowing how to do it correctly and which tools to use so that the work is not only fast but above all safe.

The wire insulation plays a crucial role – it protects the conductor from mechanical damage, moisture, and above all from accidental contact with other wires or conductive elements. If during insulation removal copper or aluminum is damaged, the wire loses its strength, which over time can lead to connection overheating, conductor breakage, or short circuit. On the other hand, leaving a too long exposed section increases the risk of accidental contact and electric shock. Step by step: how to safely remove insulation?

Safe and proper removal of insulation from electrical wires is one of the basic skills both for professional electricians and DIY enthusiasts performing small repairs at home. Although this task may seem simple, improper execution can lead to wire damage and in extreme cases to short circuits or electric shock. To prevent this, several basic rules should be followed:

  1. Choose the right tool
    Selecting the appropriate tool for insulation removal is crucial for the safety and durability of the wire. An unsuitable tool can easily damage the conductor, leading to poor conductivity, overheating, or connection failure.
  2. Set the stripper diameter
    Adjusting the stripper diameter is key to safely and effectively remove insulation from the wire. Before using the tool, check the cable cross-section you will be working with. Then set the stripper so that its hole or blade matches the wire diameter – a too small hole may cut or damage the conductor, while a too large one will not evenly score the insulation and make it difficult to remove.
  3. Prepare the wire in the tool and remove insulation
    In a manual stripper, adjust the jaws’ hole to the conductor diameter. Then squeeze the handles so that the blades cut only the insulation without damaging the conductor. Pull along the wire to remove insulation in one smooth motion. Check that the conductor strands were not damaged.
    In an automatic stripper, insert the wire into the tool jaws. Then squeeze the handles; the mechanism will automatically score and slide off the insulation along the wire. Check that the exposed conductor has the proper length and that the conductor structure remains intact.
    When using a cable knife, gently score the insulation along the wire, trying not to cut the conductor. Slide off the insulation with your fingers or pliers, controlling not to damage the conductor. Check that the conductor is undamaged.
  4. Check the wire after removing insulation
    This is a very important step where you should ensure that the conductor is whole, unscratched, and undamaged. If you notice micro-cracks or fractures, cut off the wire section and try again. For multi-conductor cables, make sure each conductor is undamaged.

  5. Check the conductor condition after insulation removal – no part of copper or aluminum should be fractured.
  6. Do not use improvised tools – e.g., kitchen scissors or table knives.
  7. Inspect every conductor in multi-core cables – ensure all are undamaged and evenly stripped.
