Chisel - definition
Chisel is a hand tool used in material processing by cutting, shaping, carving, or making indentations in various surfaces such as wood, metal, stone, or plastics. Its construction includes a working part in the form of a sharp cutting edge and a handle, allowing precise guidance and control of pressure or blows with a hammer or mallet. The cutting part of the chisel is usually made of hardened tool steel with high resistance to wear and deformation, ensuring durability and stability of the blade geometry during intensive use.
The profile of the chisel's cutting edge can take various forms depending on its purpose: from simple, flat blades used in carpentry to specialized semi-circular, oblique, or V-shaped forms used in sculpture and woodcarving. In mechanics and locksmith work, metal chisels are used for machining materials with high hardness, such as steel or brass, where both high blade strength and impact resistance are necessary.
