CMOS - definition

CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) is an integrated circuit manufacturing technology based on the use of complementary pMOS and nMOS field-effect transistors. The CMOS structure utilizes the insulating properties of a metal-oxide layer in MOSFETs, allowing for the creation of circuits characterized by extremely low static power consumption and high integration density. As a result, CMOS has become the dominant technology in the production of microprocessors, memory chips, digital logic circuits, and analog-to-digital converters.

In CMOS design, both types of transistors are connected in such a way that only one conducts at any given time, minimizing current flow in the steady state and significantly reducing energy losses. A key advantage of this technology is its ability to operate at high speeds while maintaining energy efficiency, which is particularly important in the design of mobile devices, sensors, and embedded systems. This makes CMOS circuits especially effective in applications where extended battery life is critical.

In addition to its role in digital logic, CMOS technology is also widely used in analog and mixed-signal circuits, including digital cameras, image sensors, and signal converters. Its development is closely tied to the miniaturization of semiconductor components and advances in photolithography, enabling increasingly complex and sophisticated integrated structures with high reliability and low manufacturing costs.

Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation.
