Decibel (dB) - definition

A decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit used to express the ratio between two values of the same physical quantity, most commonly power, voltage, sound intensity, or signal level. It is a relative scale, meaning it does not refer to absolute values but rather to the proportion between two quantities. The decibel value is calculated using a base-10 logarithm , which allows large dynamic ranges to be represented in a compact and easily interpretable numerical form.

In electrical engineering and acoustics, the decibel is used to analyze phenomena where changes in values are nonlinear or difficult to express using linear units. It simplifies the comparison of signal levels in electronic circuits, data transmission quality, attenuation in signal paths, and amplifier gain. For energy-related quantities such as power, a 3 dB change corresponds to approximately a twofold difference; for quantities like voltage or current, a 6 dB change represents the same proportional shift.

In acoustics , the decibel is used to quantify the intensity of sound perceived by the human ear, referenced to a standardized baseline level. This enables precise determination of noise levels, audio signals, and room acoustic performance. Although the decibel is not an SI unit, it is widely accepted and commonly used in technical practice, both in laboratory measurements and in the documentation of electronic devices and communication systems.

Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation.
