Ferromagnetic material is a substance characterized by its ability to retain permanent magnetization, resulting from the aligned arrangement of atomic magnetic moments within its structure. Below a certain critical temperature—known as the Curie temperature—these moments spontaneously align in parallel, forming regions called magnetic domains. When an external magnetic field is applied, these domains reorient in the direction of the field, increasing the overall magnetization of the material. After the field is removed, many domains retain their orientation, resulting in remanent magnetism .
Ferromagnetism is a quantum-mechanical phenomenon caused by exchange interactions between electrons that align their spins in the same direction. This ordered state is energetically favorable and leads to the formation of a stable internal magnetic field. Ferromagnetic materials exhibit high magnetic permeability and susceptibility, meaning they magnetize easily and can intensify the surrounding magnetic field.
Typical ferromagnetic materials include iron, cobalt, nickel, their alloys, and certain chemical compounds. These are widely used in technology, especially in electromagnets, transformers, electric motors, and data storage media. In materials engineering, the magnetic hysteresis properties of ferromagnets are particularly important, as they describe the behavior of the material under cyclic changes in the magnetic field. Understanding these properties allows for optimized material selection in applications such as energy-efficient magnetic cores, field sensors, and magnetic memory elements.
