GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is a data transmission technology for second-generation (2G) cellular networks, based on packet-switched communication. It extends the GSM standard by enabling users to access data services without occupying a dedicated communication channel. Unlike circuit-switched connections, where the transmission channel is reserved for the entire duration of a session, GPRS dynamically allocates radio resources based on demand, allowing for more efficient use of available bandwidth.
GPRS operates by dividing data into smaller units—packets—which are transmitted asynchronously through the network and reassembled at the receiver’s end. This approach enables simultaneous support for multiple users and allows voice and data services to coexist within the same frequency band. GPRS introduced the concept of always-on connectivity, which played a key role in the development of mobile network applications such as web browsing, email, and location-based services.
The technology supports data transmission rates of up to several tens of kilobits per second, with actual speeds depending on network conditions, the number of available timeslots, and the class of the mobile terminal. Compared to earlier GSM technologies, GPRS offers greater flexibility, lower latency, and a billing model based on the volume of transmitted data rather than connection time. It laid the foundation for subsequent packet-switched technologies such as EDGE, UMTS, and LTE, and is still used today in telemetry systems, IoT devices, and applications operating in environments with limited network infrastructure.
Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation.
