Analog signal - definition

Analog signal is a continuous-time physical signal whose value can assume an infinite number of levels within a specified range. It represents variations of a physical quantity—such as voltage, current, pressure, temperature, or light intensity—in a smooth and proportional manner to the observed phenomenon. Unlike digital signals, which take on a finite number of discrete states, an analog signal changes continuously and can accurately reflect natural variables.

Analog signals are typically represented by mathematical functions dependent on time, and their analysis relies on differential and integral calculus. Key parameters describing such a signal include amplitude,, frequency, and phase. Due to their continuous nature, analog signals are susceptible to noise and interference, which can affect their accuracy and reliability during transmission, processing, or measurement.

In practice, analog signals are widely used in electronics, automation, telecommunications, and measurement systems. They are employed to control devices, transmit information, and monitor technological processes. Analog signal processing is carried out using analog circuits such as operational amplifiers, filters, modulators, and detectors. Modern systems often integrate analog and digital technologies using analog-to-digital converters (ADC) and digital-to-analog converters (DAC), enabling transformation between both formats for further processing, analysis, or storage.

The accuracy and fidelity of analog signal representation depend on the transmission path characteristics, component quality, and applied filtering and compensation techniques. In high-precision applications, it is crucial to minimize interference and ensure thermal and temporal stability of the entire measurement or control system.
