Inertia (inertia) - definition

Inertia, also known as inertia, is a fundamental property of matter consisting in the preservation of a state of motion, that is, at rest or moving in a uniform rectilinear motion, until an external force acts on it. This concept is one of the key elements of classical mechanics, described by Newton's first principle of dynamics.

Inertia is expressed in practice by the resistance of a body to a change in its motion. The greater the mass of an object, the greater its inertia, which means, that a greater force is required, to change the speed or direction of motion of that object. The mass of an object is a measure of its inertia and does not depend on the adopted reference system or external conditions.

This phenomenon is used in many fields of technology and engineering. In mechanical systems, it influences the design of vibration damping and stabilisation systems, while in Automation and Robotics it needs to be taken into account in dynamic modelling, to ensure precise control. In inertial systems, such as gyros or accelerometers, use the phenomenon of inertia to measure accelerations and spatial orientation.

In relativistic physics, inertia takes on a broader meaning, where mass is related to energy according to Einstein's equation. However, at the level of everyday experience and classical mechanics, inertia remains a basic and intuitive concept describing the response of a body to a force.
