Acceleration is a vector physical quantity that describes the change in velocity of a body over time, both in terms of its value and its direction. It is a fundamental concept in kinematics and dynamics, defined as the derivative of the velocity vector with respect to time. The unit of acceleration in the SI system is metres per second squared (m/s²), which means a change in velocity of one metre per second for each successive second of motion.
In technical terms, acceleration occurs in many contexts, such as vehicle motion, mechanical oscillations, structural vibrations or dynamic analysis in control systems. It can be linear, when it refers to a rectilinear change in velocity, or angular, when it refers to a change in rotational speed. There are also cases of variable acceleration, which describes complex non-linear movements and requires spatio-temporal analysis.
In classical mechanics, acceleration is directly related to the acting force according to Newton's second law of dynamics - the force acting on a body is equal to the product of its mass and acceleration. In measurement technology, acceleration is recorded using accelerometers, which are used in mechanical engineering, robotics, Industrial Robotics and safety systems such as airbags.
In the context of dynamic systems engineering, acceleration plays a key role in the analysis of natural vibration, damping and the interaction of forces inertia. In structural issues, acceleration is also an important design factor in relation to overloads that can affect the durability, strength and comfort of mechanical objects, vehicles and electronic devices.
