Chromonitrile is a colloquial term for a group of iron alloys containing significant amounts of chromium and nickel, which belong to the category of austenitic stainless steels. The term is mainly used in technical and craft language to refer to materials with increased resistance to corrosion, high temperatures and the action of many chemical agents. Due to the presence of chromium in the alloy composition, a passive oxide layer is formed on the surface, protecting the metal from oxidation. Nickel, on the other hand, stabilises the austenitic structure and improves ductility and fracture toughness.
Chromonickel is widely used in the chemical, energy and food industries, as well as in the construction of laboratory apparatus, sanitary fittings, surgical instruments and Enclosures for electronic devices. Their high resistance to acids and alkalis makes them used in aggressive chemical environments where other steels would quickly degrade.
Due to their mechanical properties and structural stability at varying temperatures, chromium-nickel steels are also valued in structures operating under heat load. They can be machined, welded and formed, making them a versatile engineering material. In the classification of technical and material science standards, they correspond to steels marked with symbols including the numbers 18/8, which refers to the percentage of chromium and nickel, e.g. EN steel 1.4301, known as AISI 304.
In engineering practice, the term 'chromium-nickel' can also be used as a synonym for certain grades of resistance or resistive wires, used in heating elements and resistors with high temperature stability.
