Drone (UAV) - definition

A drone (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, UAV) is an unmanned aircraft capable of autonomous or remotely controlled flight without a pilot on board. Its design can be based on a variety of aerodynamic configurations, such as multi-rotors, airframes or hybrid vertical take-off and landing systems. Drones are an integral part of a wider system that also includes a ground station, communication systems and software for flight control and data processing.

Functionally, drones are equipped with sensor suites, navigation modules and imaging systems to perform observation, measurement, transport and inspection tasks. Depending on their intended use, they can operate in autonomous mode, based on a pre-programmed flight trajectory and algorithms artificial intelligence, or be piloted in real time by an operator via a telemetry link.

In engineering and industry, drones are used for infrastructure monitoring, terrain mapping, environmental analysis and photogrammetry. In civilian applications, they are used in precision agriculture, logistics, environmental protection and aerial filming, among others. In the military sector, they perform reconnaissance, reconnaissance and combat functions, often being equipped with advanced detection, interference and weapons systems.

The construction and operation of drones are governed by national and international aviation laws, which define their conditions of use, operational zones and safety requirements. Contemporary developments in UAV technology focus on increasing range, extending flight time, reducing weight and energy consumption, and improving the autonomy and reliability of navigation systems.
