Two-argument action - definition

A Binary Action is a basic concept in mathematics, formal logic and computer science, referring to an operation that takes two arguments (operands) and returns a single result based on them. Formally, such an operation can be represented as a function of two variables, whose domain comprises ordered pairs of elements and whose counter-domain comprises the set of results of the operation.

In the context of algebra, binary operations occur, among others, in structures such as groups, rings or bodies, where they satisfy certain axioms, e.g. connectivity, alternation or the existence of a neutral element. Examples of typical binary operations are addition, multiplication, subtraction or division, both in the set of real numbers and in the set of complex or modular numbers.

In computer science, binary operations are commonly used in programming and design algorithms. Arithmetic, logical and relational operators, such as logical sum, conjunction, value comparisons or assignments, are most often implemented as functions that take two arguments. In programming languages these operations can be overloaded, allowing their semantics to be adapted to specific data types.

In digital systems, binary operations are realised in hardware by arithmetic logic units (ALUs), where they are used to process binary data. Their applications range from elementary computational operations to complex logical and arithmetic transformations.

In logic, operations of this type define the basic rules for combining logical values, as well as enabling the construction of conditional expressions and Boolean functions. In mathematical analysis and function theory, binary operations are the starting point for describing functions of many variables and function spaces of complex structure.
