Electrochemistry - definition

Electrochemistry is an interdisciplinary field of science concerned with the study of phenomena occurring at the interface between an electronic conductor (usually a metal) and an ionic conductor (electrolyte). It analyses processes in which chemical and electrical energy are mutually transformed, with emphasis on redox reactions, during which electrons flow through an external electrical circuit.

The primary focus of electrochemistry is electrochemical cells, both galvanic and electrolytic. In a galvanic cell a chemical reaction occurs spontaneously, generating voltage and electric current, whereas in an electrolytic cell an external current source forces a chemical reaction, such as electrolysis. Both classes of systems illustrate fundamental laws of electrochemistry, such as Faraday's law, which describes the quantitative relationship between electrical charge and the amount reacted.

Electrochemistry plays a key role in the technology of Batteries, Rechargeable Batteries, Fuel Cells, Chemical Sensors, Galvanic and Corrosion processes. It enables the understanding and control of processes that are important in energy, materials engineering, molecular biology and environmental protection. Analytical techniques use electrochemical methods, such as voltammetry or potentiometry, to identify and determine chemicals in solution.

From a molecular perspective, electrochemistry studies ion transport in electrolytes, reactions at electrode-solution interfaces and the mechanisms of chemical bond formation and breakdown under the influence of an electric field. Modern electrochemistry also makes use of numerical methods and spectroscopic techniques to model and observe processes in real time, which is important for the design of modern electrochemical systems and the development of low-carbon technologies.

Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation.
