The ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer) was the first all-electronic, general-purpose programmable computer, developed between 1943 and 1945 in the United States by John Presper Eckert and John William Mauchly at the Moore School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. Originally designed for the US military, it was used to perform complex ballistic calculations, but its architecture set the foundation for the development of modern computer science.
ENIAC used some 18,000 vacuum tubes as switching and computing elements, enabling much faster processing compared to earlier electromechanical calculating machines. The system operated in decimal rather than binary arithmetic and performed calculations on numbers represented as 10-digit decimal words. Programming was initially done manually by switching cables and setting switches, which required a great deal of time and effort, but over time the ability to store instructions in memory was introduced.
The ENIAC was a serial-parallel computer and performed arithmetic operations at high speed - it could perform several thousand additions or several hundred multiplications per second, a technological breakthrough at the time. The machine occupied an area of approximately 170 m², weighed several tens of tonnes and consumed a significant amount of electricity.
From a technical and historical point of view, the ENIAC was a transitional step between electromechanical machines and digital computers based on the von Neumann architecture. Although the ENIAC itself had no built-in programme memory, its design contributed to the formulation of the concept of stored programming, which dominated the development of digital computers in the Decades that followed. Launched officially in 1946, it remained in use until 1955, influencing the development of computer science, Automation and computing technologies in civilian and military applications.
