German - definition

Germanium is a chemical element with the symbol Ge and an atomic number of 32, classified as a semi-metal in the periodic table. Under standard conditions it occurs as a hard, grey-white solid with a crystal structure similar to diamond. It is a semiconductor with intermediate electrical properties, the value of which can be modified by doping, making it an important material in electronics.

Because of its ability to conduct electricity in a controlled manner, germanium found its way into the manufacture of the first transistors, Diodes and rectifiers. Its semiconductor properties were used particularly extensively in the early days of semiconductor electronics, before it was displaced by silicon - more thermally resistant and cheaper to process. Despite this, germanium still finds niche applications, especially in radiation detector technology, high-frequency circuits, optical fibres and in advanced semiconductor structures such as heterojunctions.

In Optoelectronics, germanium is valued for its high sensitivity to infrared and its ability to absorb radiation over a wide spectral range. Its mechanical and chemical properties, as well as its ability to form alloys with other elements, allow the design of materials with complex physical properties. It occurs naturally in the Earth's crust in small quantities, mainly as an admixture in zinc and copper ores, and is extracted as a by-product of refining these metals.

Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation.
