Software Engineering (SE) is an interdisciplinary field of systems engineering that focuses on a systematic approach to the analysis, design, implementation, testing, deployment and maintenance of computer software. Its goal is to create complex information systems that meet functional and non-functional requirements with high quality, reliability, security and cost-effectiveness.
Software engineering develops software lifecycle models, such as cascading, incremental, iterative or agile (Agile), which define the production phases and their interdependencies. Issues related to requirements management, domain modelling, version control, unit and integration testing, code refactoring, quality metrics and continuous integration are an integral part of the software engineering process.
High importance is placed on the use of design patterns, reference architectures, SOLID principles and coding and documentation best practices to enable scalability, maintainability and extensibility of systems. Equally important are project management aspects such as effort estimation, resource planning and risk management, which determine the success of IT projects.
Software engineering draws on knowledge of discrete mathematics, automata theory, algorithmics, formal methods, as well as cognitive psychology and ergonomics Interfaces, which enables the creation of user-centred systems. Today's integrated environments and CASE (Computer-Aided Software Engineering) tools support the automation of many design and implementation tasks. Software engineering is crucial in the development of real-time systems, mobile applications, embedded systems, cloud and distributed and safety-critical software.
