Compressor is a technical device used to increase the pressure of a gas by reducing its volume, respecting the principles of thermodynamics of gases. In industrial practice, compressors are used to compress air and other gases, enabling them to be stored, transported or used directly as a working medium in pneumatic drives, refrigeration systems, air-conditioning systems and technological processes.
The mechanism of operation of a compressor involves performing mechanical work on a gas by means of a working element, which may be a piston, bolt, vanes or diaphragm. The mechanical energy is transferred to the gas molecules, increasing its internal energy and causing an increase in pressure and, in most cases, temperature. Depending on their design, compressors are divided into positive displacement and flow compressors, which differ in the way the compression process is implemented.
Compressor design must take into account parameters such as maximum operating pressure, volumetric capacity, energy efficiency and the cooling requirements of the compressed medium. High-performance compressors use advanced intercooling systems and lubrication systems to minimise mechanical and thermal losses. Modern developments often use oil-free compressors, essential in the food, pharmaceutical and electronics industries where absolute purity of the compressed gas is critical.
In industrial automation practice, compressors are an integral part of pneumatic systems, providing power to actuators, valves and Pneumatic Tools. Specialised applications also use compressors for technical gases, such as hydrogen or nitrogen, in systems requiring high tightness and precise control of process parameters.
