Convection is the process of heat and mass transport in fluid media, such as liquids and gases, resulting from the macroscopic movement of molecules. This phenomenon occurs due to differences in temperature or density in a given medium, leading to the formation of convection currents. Convection plays a key role in many physical and technical phenomena, including cooling, heating and atmospheric circulation processes.
There are two basic mechanisms of convection: natural (free) and forced convection. In the case of natural convection, the movement of the medium is caused by buoyancy forces resulting from an uneven temperature distribution, with no external influence. Forced convection, on the other hand, occurs when the flow of a medium is initiated by mechanical factors such as fans, pumps or the movement of an object in a liquid or gas. Both types of convection are described by mathematical relationships derived from the equations of heat transport and fluid dynamics.
From an engineering perspective, convection is one of the three primary mechanisms of heat transfer, along with conduction and radiation. In electronic and mechanical systems, it is used to efficiently remove excess heat from components, which affects their reliability and lifespan. It is also used in the design of heat exchangers, air-conditioning systems and in the analysis of meteorological and oceanographic phenomena.
The quantitative description of the convection phenomenon takes into account parameters such as the Nusselt, Prandtl and Rayleigh numbers, which make it possible to assess the intensity of heat transfer in a given system. Taking these quantities into account is essential for modelling thermal processes in industrial applications and scientific research.
