Arc lamp - definition

An Arc Lamp is a light source that operates on the principle of an electric arc, formed between two electrodes, usually made of carbon or heat-resistant metals. The light emission results from the intense heating of the electrode material and the ionisation of the gas present in the arc gap. This phenomenon occurs as a result of the application of a voltage sufficient to cause an electrical breakthrough, which initiates and sustains an arc at a very high temperature, reaching several thousand degrees Celsius.

The first arc lamps operated in open air, but over time controlled atmospheres, such as argon, neon or mercury vapour, were used to increase light output and prolong life. Depending on the gas used and the design, arc lamps can emit light with different colour and spectral characteristics. In high-pressure versions, such as the mercury vapour or xenon lamp, intense white or daylight-like light emission is achieved.

Due to their high brightness and focused luminous flux, arc lamps were commonly used in film projectors, stage spotlights, lighthouses and industrial lighting systems. They were also used in arc welding technology and in some chemical processes where an intense heat source was essential. However, their operation involves high power consumption, UV emissions and the need for arc stabilisation and cooling systems.

In terms of design, the arc lamp requires a specialised ignition and current control system, as the arc characteristics are non-linear and unstable without adequate constraints. Although it has been largely superseded by more modern light sources such as discharge lamps and LEDs, it is still sometimes used in specialist applications where extreme light intensity is required.
