Electrode - definition

An Electrode is a conductive component of an electrochemical system that allows an electrical charge to flow between an external circuit and an electrolyte, acting as an interface between an electron and an ionic conductor. Depending on the direction of current flow and the type of redox reactions taking place, the electrode can act as anode or cathode. Its primary function is to initiate and sustain electrochemical reactions by exchanging electrons with ions present in solution.

In galvanic cells electrodes participate in spontaneous chemical reactions generating a voltage, while in electrolytic systems they enable the reaction to be forced by an external current source. The oxidation or reduction of chemicals takes place at the electrodes, accompanied by electron transfer between the electrode and the molecules in the electrolyte.

The electrode material must have good electrical conductivity, chemical and electrochemical resistance and stability under the operating conditions of the system. Typical electrode materials include metals, graphite, alloys, as well as conductive oxides and composite materials. In specialised applications, reference electrodes of known potential are also used to calibrate and measure electrochemical voltage.

Electrodes are an indispensable component in technologies such as electrochemical cells, rechargeable batteries, electrodes in welding machines, measurement electrodes in sensors, and in medicine, where they are used in diagnostics and therapy, e.g. in electrocardiography or neuromuscular stimulation. The design and properties of electrodes have a direct impact on the efficiency, selectivity and durability of the systems in which they are used.
