Anode - definition

The anode is the electrode into which electrons flow from the external electrical circuit. Depending on the type of device or electrochemical process, it can function as either the positive or the negative terminal. In general terms, the anode is the site at which oxidation occurs—that is, where particles or ions release electrons—making it a critical component in electrochemical cells, vacuum tubes, semiconductor diodes, and many other systems.

In a galvanic (voltaic) cell, the anode serves as the negative terminal because it supplies electrons to the external circuit. Conversely, in an electrolytic cell, the anode is the positive terminal that attracts anions from the electrolyte. In vacuum devices, such as electron tubes or cathode ray tubes, the anode attracts electrons emitted by the cathode and is typically positively biased with respect to it. In semiconductor diodes, the anode is the terminal to which a positive voltage must be applied relative to the cathode in order to allow current to flow.

The significance of the anode extends beyond simple conduction—its material, geometry, and operating conditions influence the durability, efficiency, and performance characteristics of the entire system. In electrical engineering and industrial chemistry, the selection of a suitable anode is essential for technological processes such as electroplating and electrolysis, as well as for the design of energy sources like batteries and fuel cells.
