The Mainframe is a high-performance central computer designed to handle large numbers of concurrent tasks, users and significant volumes of data in operationally critical environments. Mainframe systems are distinguished by their reliability, scalability, security and ability to run continuously for long periods without downtime, making them the cornerstone of IT infrastructures in sectors such as banking, insurance, public administration and industry.
The mainframe architecture is based on an elaborate structure of processors, buses, operating memory and storage resources, enabling thousands of threads to run simultaneously and support multiple independent instances of operating systems. They are characterised by the ability to perform transactional processing in batch mode and interactive mode with minimal response time. Advanced redundancy and error detection mechanisms ensure a high level of availability (high availability) and fault tolerance.
Mainframes usually operate in multi-user environments where multiple user terminals share a common computing system. The typical operating system for these machines is z/OS, but many modern units also support virtualisation and can run Linux or other open platforms in parallel. Extensive memory management, access control and process prioritisation capabilities enable efficient resource utilisation and quality of service (QoS) assurance.
Today's mainframes combine the traditional approach of computing with modern technologies such as containerisation, cloud computing or integration with mobile and web applications. Despite the development of distributed server architectures, they remain a key component of the IT infrastructure in organisations requiring reliable, secure and efficient transactional systems.
