Batch mode - definition
Batch mode (batch mode, batch processing) is a way of performing computing tasks or operations in which data and instructions are grouped into sets - called batches - and processed automatically, without user interaction during execution. Batch processing differs from interaction mode in that all input data and instructions must be prepared in advance, and the process is run as a whole, often at specific intervals or on a schedule.
The technique was widely used in the early days of computing, particularly in mainframe systems and minicomputers, where users provided sets of punched cards or text files containing programs and data, which were then sequentially processed by the operating system. Today, batch processing is used wherever repetitive operations on large data sets are required, such as reporting, invoice processing, database migrations, log analysis or engineering calculations.
Batch mode is particularly effective for tasks requiring high processing power or long processing times, as it enables better use of system resources and reduces user interaction costs. It can be implemented locally, on servers, as well as in distributed and cloud environments. In operating systems, batch processing is supported by queue mechanisms, shell scripts, task schedulers and dedicated process automation environments. The distinctive feature of this mode is the unambiguousness and deterministic nature of the operation - once a batch is prepared, it is processed invariably, according to a specific sequence of instructions and input parameters.
