Micrometer - definition

The micrometer is a precision Measuring Tools used to make highly accurate measurements of the length, thickness or external and internal diameter of Mechanical components in the range from a few millimetres to hundredths or even thousandths of a millimetre. Its design is based on the principle of the micrometer screw, where the axial displacement of the spindle relative to the anvil is proportional to the angle of rotation of the measuring drum, and the graduation allows direct reading of the measured value.

Others divide micrometers into different types, depending on the application: external micrometers, internal micrometers and depth micrometers, each designed to measure the corresponding geometric features of components. Tools are made from high-quality materials with a low coefficient of thermal expansion, such as hardened steel or carbide, which ensures dimensional stability and high wear resistance during intensive use.

In addition to the classic analogue versions, today's micrometres are also available in digital variants, equipped with LCD displays and functions for electronic data transfer to measurement systems. High-end devices may have pressure compensation mechanisms to eliminate errors resulting from over-compression of the objects being measured, thus achieving very high repeatability and measurement accuracy. Micrometers are widely used in precision industry, mechanical engineering, toolmaking and metrology laboratories, where reliability and precision of measurement are key technological requirements.
