Pneumatics - definition

Pneumatics is the technical field dealing with the use of compressed gas, most commonly air, to transfer and control energy in mechanical systems. It is based on the physical properties of gases such as elasticity, compressibility and the ability to store energy under pressure. Pneumatics is used in actuator drives, industrial automation systems, material handling systems, as well as medical devices and hand tools.

The basic components of pneumatic systems are compressors, which generate compressed air, and air preparation units including filters, dryers and pressure regulators to ensure the quality of the working medium. The energy carried by the compressed air is used to perform mechanical work through linear and rotary actuators, pneumatic drives or robotic grippers mechanisms.

Characteristic features of pneumatic systems are high dynamic performance, simplicity of design, safety of use and ease of maintenance. Pneumatics, on the other hand, has the disadvantage of relatively low energy efficiency due to unavoidable heat losses during compression and expansion of air. Modern pneumatic systems use advanced proportional and digital control technologies, integrating electrically controlled valves (solenoid valves) and condition diagnostic systems to enable precise motion control and increase the reliability of entire systems.

In engineering practice, Pneumatics co-exists with Hydraulics and Electrical Automation to form complex mechatronic systems, where the choice of operating medium depends on the application requirements for force, speed, precision and environmental conditions of the equipment.
