PROM (Programmable Read-Only Memory) - definition

PROM (Programmable Read-Only Memory) is a type of non-volatile semiconductor memory that allows data to be programmed once by the user after the manufacturing process. Unlike the classic ROM, the contents of which are permanently stored during chip manufacture, the PROM remains empty until the first and also the last write.

The writing of information into the PROM is realised by physically changing the structure of the internal connections, usually by burning through thin strings (called fuses) using an electrical impulse with appropriate parameters. This process is irreversible - once programmed, the contents of the memory cannot be changed or erased. For this reason, PROMs are used where data permanence and protection against accidental modifications are required.

Structurally, PROMs are based on a matrix of memory cells, organised as a grid of Transistors or Diodes connected to selectively programmable elements. Reading the data involves checking the conduction state of each cell, which is done quickly and without the need for power while the information is stored.

PROMs were widely used in electronic devices in the 1980s and 1990s, before being largely replaced by more flexible technologies such as EPROMs and EEPROMs. Despite this, they can still be found in systems requiring low cost, simple design and resistance to external tampering with memory contents.
