Equilibrium (in mechanics) is the state of a body in which all external forces and moments acting on that body balance each other, so that the system exhibits no translational or rotational acceleration. In the context of statics, a branch of classical mechanics, the condition of equilibrium is a zero resultant force vector and a zero resultant force moment with respect to any reference point. Equilibrium can be static, when the body remains at rest, or dynamic, when it moves in uniform rectilinear motion without changing its spatial orientation.
Depending on the response of the system to small perturbations, there are three basic types of equilibrium: stable, unstable and neutral. In stable equilibrium, once the perturbation ceases, the body returns to its initial state, which is usually associated with the existence of a local minimum of the potential energy function of the system. Unstable equilibrium occurs when even a small disturbance leads the system to move permanently away from equilibrium. Inert equilibrium, on the other hand, means that the system assumes a new equilibrium state after a disturbance with no tendency to return or move further away.
Equilibrium analysis plays a key role in the design of mechanical systems, engineering structures and dynamic systems to assess their stability and predict their behaviour under different loads.
