Statics - definition

Statics is a branch of classical mechanics dealing with the analysis of forces acting on bodies at rest or moving with constant velocity, assuming that accelerations of the system are zero. Its primary purpose is to determine the conditions of equilibrium of mechanical systems, which means that the sum of the forces and the sum of the moments of the forces acting on a body must be zero. Statics is the foundation of the design of engineering structures such as bridges, buildings, machine frames or load-bearing components, where it is crucial to ensure stability and safety through appropriate load transfer.

Static analysis considers both external forces (e.g. self-weight, support reaction forces, imposed loads) and internal interactions between structural elements. Important tools in statics are equilibrium methods, principles of moments and geometrical conditions for force systems. Statics is based on the assumption of non-deformability of bodies, which allows a simplified analysis without taking into account the influence of elasticity or plasticity of materials, which are the subject of other branches of mechanics, such as strength of materials or mechanics of continuous media. Despite these simplifications, statics provides the necessary basis for evaluating loads, designing support systems and identifying critical points in engineering structures.
