Statistics - definition

Statistics is a branch of mathematics dealing with methods of collecting, describing, analysing and interpreting numerical data to draw conclusions about random phenomena or processes observed in nature, technology, economics and other fields. Its primary purpose is to transform raw data into structured information that allows decision-making under conditions of uncertainty and to assess variability and trends in the sets under study.

Statistics is divided into two main streams: descriptive, which focuses on the presentation of data using numerical and graphical indicators (such as mean, median, standard deviation), and statistical inference, which involves extrapolating information from a sample to the whole population, using probabilistic tools. These methods enable, among other things, the assessment of the significance of results, the estimation of population parameters and hypothesis testing.

In engineering applications, statistics plays a key role in reliability analysis, quality control, forecasting and the modelling of physical and economic phenomena. Through the use of probabilistics, statistics allows the description of random processes, as well as the assessment of risk and uncertainty in measurements and mathematical models. Modern statistics is increasingly integrating with computer science, providing the basis for fields such as data analysis, machine learning or data mining, where processing large sets of information and identifying hidden relationships are crucial.
