The Turing test is a conceptual procedure proposed in 1950 by British mathematician and computer science pioneer Alan Turing to assess a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour indistinguishable from that of a human. In its original form, the test takes the form of a thought experiment in which a human (a judge) conducts a conversation - usually via a text terminal - with two participants: a second human and a machine. If the judge is unable to identify with reasonable certainty which of the interlocutors is human, the machine is deemed to have passed the Turing test.
The purpose of the test is not to determine whether the machine understands or consciously thinks, but whether its behaviour in a linguistic interaction can simulate human communication to such an extent that it is indistinguishable from a conversation with a human. The key assumption here is to observe the effects of the action rather than the internal structure of the system. For this reason, the Turing test is a reference point in philosophical and technical discussions about artificial intelligence, machine consciousness and the limits of automation of human cognitive competence.
Although the Turing test has played a fundamental role in the development of artificial intelligence research, numerous criticisms and modifications of it have emerged over time. Objections include its focus solely on external imitation, its omission of a deeper understanding of semantics and its susceptibility to strategies that mask the limitations of the system. Despite this, the test still remains one of the best-known tokens of attempts to determine the level of 'intelligence' of machines and often appears as a benchmark in assessing the sophistication of conversational systems and language models.
