A distribution transformer is an electrical device belonging to the group of power transformers whose main task is to reduce the medium voltage (usually 15-20 kV) to the low voltage level (usually 400/230 V) used in local distribution networks. It is a key component of the electricity infrastructure, enabling the safe and efficient supply of electricity to end users such as households, small industrial plants, schools or public facilities.
Technically, a distribution transformer works on the principle of electromagnetic induction, transferring energy between the primary and secondary windings through common magnetic cores. Oil-filled or dry-type transformers are the most commonly used, differing in cooling method and applications. The design of a distribution transformer is suitable for continuous operation under fluctuating loads, ensuring adequate levels of insulation, energy efficiency and operational safety.
In low-voltage networks, this transformer also has an isolation and protection function, protecting consumers from the effects of overvoltage, short circuits and power asymmetry. Its location in the network layout is important for voltage stability and the reduction of transmission losses. The use of distribution transformers entails compliance with technical standards, including energy efficiency, noise levels and resistance to environmental conditions. In modern energy management systems, these transformers can be equipped with sensors that monitor operating parameters in real time, supporting diagnostic and maintenance activities.
